Ask simple questions like, “What is your favorite thing to do?”
“What do you think it’s like to be a (insert occupation)?”
“What would you like/dislike about that job?”
These kinds of questions can help get your kiddos started on the road to solid career decision making. Later on, discussing college majors vs. the day-to-day realities of jobs related to those majors can be very helpful. Encouraging teens to shadow professionals in their areas of interest helps them acquire important, first-hand knowledge. They won’t always take your advice, but if you start these discussions early, they will begin asking all the right questions. And THAT is the key to career satisfaction!
