Say Yes to Stability: Simple Ways to Keep Kids Regulated All Summer Long

While May marks the final push of the school year for many families, it's also nationally recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month — a timely reminder that our children’s emotional well-being deserves just as much attention as their academic progress. As summer approaches and the daily grind of school routines fades, it may be tempting to fully embrace a carefree schedule. But maintaining structure — for both you and your child — is essential for supporting emotional balance, behavioral development, and overall mental health which helps to keep kids regulated .
Summer break is often viewed as a much-needed escape from early alarms and busy schedules. However, the unpredictability that comes with vacation travel, spontaneous playdates, and unstructured downtime can sometimes lead to emotional dysregulation — especially for younger children. Research shows that consistent routines help children feel safe, secure, and better able to manage their emotions, regardless of the season.
To help your child thrive emotionally during the summer months, consider implementing these three evidence-based practices:
Prioritize Consistent Bedtimes. According to Psychology Today, children’s emotional regulation and behavioral control are influenced more by the regularity of their sleep schedule than the actual number of hours they sleep. In other words, it’s not just about getting enough rest — it’s about going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day. Sticking to a predictable sleep routine, even during summer, can lead to better mood regulation as well as improved behavior and focus. Try keeping bedtime and wake-up times within the same 30–60 minute window each day, even on weekends or during travel.
Boundaries with Screen Time. Excessive screen time has been linked to poor executive functioning and decreased academic performance, according to the National Library of Medicine. While it’s natural to rely more on screens during unstructured summer days, setting boundaries is key. Offer appealing alternatives like outdoor play, arts and crafts, board games, or cooking together. When kids are engaged in meaningful activities, they’re less likely to reach for a device out of boredom.
Maintain Mental Health Support. With school-related stressors on pause, it might seem logical to take a break from your child’s counseling sessions — but mental health isn’t seasonal. Continuing therapy during the summer helps reinforce progress, provides support during transitions, and equips children with coping strategies for the upcoming school year. Whether your child attends sessions in person or virtually, maintaining that consistency sends a powerful message: their mental health matters all year long.
